About Leela Suria Dance Academy

A Legacy of Grace & Devotion

Leela Suria Dance Academy was founded in 2000 by Srimathi Leela Suria. The aims of LSDA are to highlight our Indian culture through Bharathanatyam, to teach the younger generation to appreciate and support the Indian heritage and to expand the ancient Indian classical dance throughout Malaysia and other parts of the world.

It is our goal at LSDA to provide the best possible training and to develop each student's talent to his or her potential. Dance provides children with an outlet for self- expression. It gives pre-schoolers the opportunity to socialize with their peers and most importantly, to obey and take instructions from a teacher. The physical benefits are long lasting and will continue to grow throughout life..

The History of Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms in India, originating over 2,000 years ago in the temples of Tamil Nadu. It was traditionally performed by Devadasis—women who dedicated their lives to the service of the gods through dance and music.

The dance is a perfect blend of Nritta (pure rhythmic movements), Nritya (expressive storytelling through hand gestures), and Natya (dramatic elements). It beautifully embodies the three main components of the art form: Anga (body movements), Mudras (hand gestures), and Abhinaya (facial expressions).
